A mecca of sorts for pilots, First Flight is where Wilbur and Orville Wright honed the techniques for powered flight. The park is a great fly-in destination complete with 3000 ft runway, pilot lounge, and – of course – monuments depicting the first successful flights of the Wright Flyer on December 17th, 1903. Traveling 120 feet in 12 seconds was no small feat. David McCullough’s book (review) depicts the brothers’ struggle to bring the airplane into existence.
Flying 852 feet in 59 seconds, Wilbur clocked in at 9.8 MPH. No small task in 1903.
